I too, am one of those "happy with how I am" people, I'm not "ashamed" at all, ever.
BUT - I am un-amused, disgusted, irritated and out of patience with the well meaning friends, acquaintances, strangers and members of my family who continue to try and push their agenda and stereotypes on me.Tofu Mom (AKA Tofu-n-Sprouts)https://www.blogger.com/profile/16536769929670412138noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4683377924130527821.post-4267486236435962702012-04-01T00:01:06.617-04:002012-04-01T00:01:06.617-04:00You make an excellent point, Eric. Because fear and shame are paralyzing feelings, not empowering ones."

Very well said! Fat-shaming is indeed not the way to go, especially if you're trying to do activism. but I think it goes deeper than this.

It is not only practical to avoid fat-shaming in order to win a cause, but it is also morally obligatory. Shaming someone for their fat is no different than shaming someone for their sexual preference or the color of their skin. It is morally outrageous to call out an oppressed group, regardless of what ethical cause you might be fighting for.

As much as I want the cause of veganism to spread far and wide, I would be loathe to only achieve it through demonizing an entire segment of society. As I point out in my blog entry on the topic, it sickens me that PCRM put out this ad, not just because it does no one any good, but also because it is morally impermissible.Eric Herbosohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07888413471076959781noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4683377924130527821.post-46664234327014527642012-03-30T20:09:10.574-04:002012-03-30T20:09:10.574-04:00Thank you for the kind comment!Thank you for the kind comment!Kaseyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02514826925652944960noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4683377924130527821.post-7362293399896203932012-03-30T20:08:45.229-04:002012-03-30T20:08:45.229-04:00I'm so happy for you! I know there is that third category of people who simply love and accept their bodies, but you have to admit, that's a vast minority. People may choose a vegan diet for one of a million reasons. people come in all different shapes and sizes and just because we're vegan doesn't mean we're a size zero blonde. GRRRRR As a health professional I hate to see this weight stigma so prevalent in our society and even in our medical community. There's actually a small third category: Those of us who are comfortable in our fat but are harassed for being as we are. (I've been "moo-ed at in a clothing store while looking for underthings.
